Kacmun: Korean American Coalition Model United Nation

KACMUN, or the Korean American Coalition Model United Nations, is an innovative youth development program that empowers young people to engage with global issues and become active global citizens. For over 30 years, KAC MUN has brought together high school students to debate world affairs, draft resolutions, and build relationships that transcend cultural boundaries. Read on to learn more about the history, structure, experiences, and impacts of this dynamic organization.

What is KACMUN?

KACMUN is a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly, organized and run by the Korean-American Coalition (KAC). High school students take on the roles of UN ambassadors and members of international organizations to debate and solve pressing global issues. KAC MUN aims to develop young leaders with global perspectives.

History of KACMUN

How it started

KAC organized the first KACMUN in Los Angeles in 1989. Around 150 students from 15 high schools participated, taking on the roles of UN member states. KAC MUN was envisioned as a way to promote global awareness and leadership skills among Korean-American youth.

Growth over the years

Over the past 30+ years, KACMUN has expanded significantly. It now draws over 1,000 high school students from over 100 schools across Southern California. KAC MUN sessions take place annually in Los Angeles, as well as in other locations like Washington D.C. Recently, KAC has also begun organizing middle school MUN programs.

Structure and Organization of KACMUN

KAC MUN simulates the various committees and bodies of the United Nations.

Students participate in different committees, including the General Assembly Plenary, Specialized Agencies, and regional bodies. Committees debate resolutions to address issues like nuclear non-proliferation, human rights, or economic development.

KAC MUN is led by a Secretary General and student officers. These leaders guide debates, ensure proper parliamentary procedures, and facilitate compromises between member states.

Each participating school represents a UN member state. Student delegates research their assigned country’s foreign policies and priorities. They learn to advocate their country’s position while also building consensus.

The KACMUN Experience

The heart of KAC MUN lies in its debates, teamwork, and exchange of ideas.

Debates and resolutions

In committee sessions, student delegates give speeches, negotiate draft resolutions, and collaborate to find solutions. Agreeing requires research, critical thinking, compromise, and persuasion.

Connecting with peers

KAC MUN facilitates interaction between students from different schools, backgrounds, and perspectives. Friendships form through shared goals of diplomacy.

Personal growth

By taking on leadership roles and tackling complex issues, students develop public speaking skills and grow in confidence. They also gain a deeper knowledge of international affairs.

Impact of KACMUN

KACMUN makes a significant impact on the youth who participate by building crucial skills.

Developing leadership skills

As leaders and ambassadors, students cultivate skills in communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution. They learn to express themselves and negotiate respectfully.

Promoting global awareness

Exploring global issues from diverse viewpoints increases participants’ international understanding. They become more informed, empathetic citizens.

Building community

KAC MUN connects students to a broader community of socially conscious peers. Many participants form lifelong friendships across school and district boundaries.
